Can we trust the stories recorded in the Bible as true, and historically accurate? Is there archaeological evidence for the Exodus? Did King David actually exist? What is the relationship between archaeological evidence and Christian faith? In this essay, Ted Wright, Executive Director of Epic Archaeology, outlines some of the key issues, ideas, and challenges of biblical archaeology.
Included is an overview of archeology’s most important discoveries related to the biblical history and biblical text, as well as the most recent discoveries currently being studied. As biblical discoveries often come as media announcements with little context or explanation, this is an invaluable overview and guide to the field of biblical archaeology.
“Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.” Those are the words surrounding the scene on a national seal, designed and proposed by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams a couple of months after the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
They clearly believed in and were influenced by the story of the biblical Exodus, enough so that they proposed this national seal depicting Moses and the Israelites on the shore, and pharaoh and his chariots being drowned in the Red Sea, as a symbol of freedom and liberation from tyranny.
